Pregnancy alters your immune system, making you more susceptible to foodborne illnesses. Bacteria that might normally just cause a mild stomach upset can cross the placenta and pose severe risks to fetal health.
Listeria & Unpasteurized Risks
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria found in certain raw foods. Infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in newborns.
- Avoid: Unpasteurized (raw) milk and dairy products.
- Avoid: Soft cheeses with white rinds (Brie, Camembert) and blue-veined cheeses, unless cooked until steaming hot.
- Avoid: Cold cured meats (salami, prosciutto) and cold pre-packed meats unless heated thoroughly.
Safe Seafood Options
Seafood is a fantastic source of lean protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for baby's brain development. However, certain fish contain high levels of mercury, a heavy metal that can impair the developing nervous system.
Fish to Avoid (High Mercury)
Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, Tilefish, and Marlin.
Safe Seafood (Low Mercury, High Nutrients)
Salmon, Anchovies, Herring, Sardines, Freshwater Trout, and Pacific Oysters. Aim for 2-3 servings (8-12 ounces) per week.
Raw Eggs and Meat
Ensure all meat and poultry are cooked thoroughly, with no pink remaining. Avoid raw or partially cooked eggs to prevent Salmonella infection. This includes homemade mayonnaise, raw cookie dough, and certain dressings.
